Sealants are used to prevent tooth decay from starting in all those tiny grooves on the chewing surface of permanent molars. These adult teeth typically erupt at ages 6 and 12, when tooth-brushing habits may not be the best. Dr. Gentling places all of the sealants much the same way he does fillings but there is no numbing. Dr. Gentling will first clean out all those little grooves then use a special cavity detecting dye to ensure that decay is not sealed in the tooth. Then he will place a filling material to fill in all those groves so the chewing surface will be protected from tooth decay. Dr. Gentling actually uses tooth-filling composite for his sealants so they will last as long as possible, typically 10 years or more.
