For your convenience, Dr. Gentling performs most root canals (endodontic therapy) in his office. Root canals save teeth that would otherwise have to be pulled. Root canals are used on teeth that are infected from decay, broken down from wear or are chronically painful. Root canal therapy is where the dentist removes the nerve and infection from inside the tooth. Of course, you are totally numb so you won't feel any pain during the procedure. Once the nerve is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and filled using special materials. Often times Dr. Gentling will recommend a crown on the tooth to protect it from further damage. Most people experience only slight discomfort after a root canal procedure. This only lasts a day or two and often Ibuprofen is all that is needed.
