How can I recognize periodontitis?

Periodontitis always begins with inflammation of the gums. If you experience the symptoms such as gum bleed when you brush your teeth, the gum may look red and swollen, and a discolored layer of bacterial plaque appears on the teeth, bad breath, periodontitis, loose teeth, and gum recession. Periodontitis is caused by the build-up of bacteria in the form of dental plaque. When plaque becomes harder over time, it turns into tartar. This encourages the growth of bacterial plaque towards the tooth root.

Procedures to treat the gum disease:

  • Deep cleaning
The most common and conservative forms of treatment for periodontal (gum) disease are done through deep cleaning called Scaling and root planing. Scaling is removing tartar from above and below the gum line. Root planing is getting rid of a rough spot on the tooth root where the germs gather and contribute to gum disease.

Surgical treatments:

  • Flap surgery:
Periodontists perform surgery to remove tartar deposited in deep pockets. This procedure involves lifting back, and tartar is removed, then the gums are sutured so that tissue fits around the tooth again.
  • Regeneration:
The bone supporting the teeth is lost due to periodontal disease. A regeneration procedure is performed to reverse some of the damage by regenerating lost bone and tissue.
  • Soft tissue graft:
In this procedure, a periodontist replaces the receded gum tissue due to gum disease. A sample of tissue from a healthy area in your mouth is taken to replace the receded or has been removed due to gum disease.

Each type of treatment is different, and it depends on how far the disease has progressed. When the gum disease is at the earliest stage, then scaling and root planing can be completed in one visit.
